Leave the city behind for a 2-day sojourn that brings in the best of the experiences, destinations and local produce from Sydney’s north.
Travel to the glorious Hawkesbury River region on Sydney’s northern fringe, where picturesque waters are flanked by the Australian bush. Here we’ll visit a local secret – the Broken Bay Pearl Farm, where Akoya oysters produce stunning, naturally lustruous pearls. We’ll take a cruise through the waterways to visit the pearl farm, learn about farming and grading the pearls, and see the beautiful nature and wildlife of this area.
Lunch at a fabulous local restaurant is followed by an afternoon of exclusive, behind the scenes tasting at some of the Hunter Valley’s best wineries. Over these two days you’ll visit such landmark wineries as Tyrrell’s, Brokenwood and Audrey Wilkinson, with opportunities to taste not only the wine, but the incredible local produce of the Hunter region.
Overnight at Spicers Guesthouse, a lovely haven in the countryside where birdlife and wildlife abound.
This is a wonderful 2-day escape, which can be easily tailored as a longer Hunter stay, or combined with excursions further afield to the Blue Mountains, the wine regions of Orange or Mudgee, or country New South Wales.
Highlights & inspiration
Our morning by the waters of Broken Bay is a special part of this itinerary. We’ll learn directly from the pearl farmers to visit the oyster-racks, see the harvesting, and cruise the quiet, peaceful waters of the Hawkesbury. At the Shellar Door you’ll learn the virtues of pearls to assess how they’re graded – a hands-on chance to surround yourself with stunning, natural pearls.
In the Hunter Valley, we focus primarily on Tyrrell’s, Brokenwood and Audrey Wilkinson – the three Hunter members of the exclusive Ultimate Winery Experiences Australia collection. We’ll also have the chance to bring in spontaneous tastings of wine, beer and other local produce along the way to suit your tastes.
Spicers Guesthouse is our overnight retreat, situated amongst the countryside and wineries of Pokolbin. Recently renovated, it’s a haven of relaxed style and charm, with a fabulous onsite restaurant, and plenty of places to relax with a glass of wine to watch the kangaroos at dusk.
